BIO
I delight in creating uniquely lyrical, sculptural & softly flowing jewelry from sheets of seemingly inflexible, hard metals. Through the juxtaposition of my imagination, experimentation, science & plenty of grit, I am perpetually alive to possibility.
A native New Yorker, I grew up on Long Island riding my bicycle with the wind, ponytail streaming behind me. Years later, I turned a dream into reality when I studied the principles of silversmithing at the Mendocino Art Center in northern California. Not long afterwards, I retired from my first career as an English teacher, Drama Director and Speech Team coach to turn my designs into jewelry.
I am inspired by the art of dance, dynamic and graceful movement, the sun, wind, nature's responses, and all acts of courage. Ballroom dancing, bicycling, playing the piano and working with my hands provide unequivocal joy. When my jewelry provokes smiles, my hearI sings.
I work in Argentium® Sterling Silver, a highly tarnish-resistant, fine sterling silver. I draw my designs, transfer them to a sheet of Argentium® and cut out each one, fine tuning with a jeweler’s hand-saw and hand-files. Next, I texture the metal and hand-engrave different designs and motifs on both sides. Ultimately, I sculpt the metal with a nylon mallet on wooden stakes and intricately contour with jewelry pliers. My Gilded Collection has 14K gold (or 14K gold-filled) wire draped in lyrical motifs, and both the Silver and Gilded Collections are adorned with A, AA or Gem grade saltwater Akoya, Freshwater or Keshi pearls in round, baroque, coin, oval, pear or petal shapes.
Argentium® Sterling Silver was invented by Peter Johns of Middlesex University, England in the 1990's. Recently made available in the United States, it combines at least 93-97% fine silver, twenty percent less copper, and germanium, a white, crystalline element that prevents tarnishing.
My jewelry is lightweight, lustrous, strong and durable. Each design frames and complements the face and any mode of attire, from business suit to casual wear to evening gown. When I walk into my studio, the prospect of exploration & working with my hands is indescribably exciting. I strive to create designs that move and radiate confidence. To watch a piece come “alive” and ultimately share the experience with others is an immeasurable joy.
